SINCE 2006, SOIL HAS BEEN WORKING TO BRING DIGNITY, HEALTH, AND SAFETY TO HAITIANS WHO LACK ACCESS TO BASIC SANITATION. SOIL PROVIDES SAFE, CLEAN TOILETS, THEN COLLECTS AND TREATS THE WASTE TO MAKE RICH, ORGANIC COMPOST - TRANSFORMING ONE OF HAITI'S GREATEST PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGES INTO A CRITICAL RESOURCE FOR ITS ENVIRONMENT.

AFTER THE 2010 EARTHQUAKE, SOIL WORKED WITH HAITIAN COMMUNITY LEADERS ON RELIEF EFFORTS IN AND AROUND PORT-AU-PRINCE. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OXFAM, SOIL BUILT 200 TOILETS THAT SERVED OVER 20,000 PEOPLE IN 30 DIFFERENT CAMPS. TODAY, SOIL MAINTAINS ITS EMERGENCY SANITATION PROGRAM FOR THOSE STILL LIVING IN CAMPS, AS WELL THE SHADA COMMUNITY OF CAP-HAITIEN, WHERE THE CHOLERA OUTBREAK HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY LETHAL.

SOIL HAS ALSO LAUNCHED AN EXCITING NEW SOCIAL BUSINESS PILOT FOR SANITATION SERVICES, IN WHICH PARTICIPANTS PAY A SMALL MONTHLY USER FEE TO COVER THE COSTS OF TOILET MAINTENANCE AND WASTE COLLECTION. THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO LEAD THE WAY FOR A SUSTAINABLE PRIVATE SECTOR SOLUTION TO SANITATION THAT CAN REACH ALL HAITIANS.

SOIL ALSO RUNS TWO COMPOSTING WASTE TREATMENT FACILITIES IN HAITI THAT TRANSFORM THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF TOILET WASTE INTO RICH, ORGANIC, AGRICULTURAL-GRADE COMPOST EACH WEEK. SOME OF THE COMPOST IS USED IN SOIL'S EXPERIMENTAL AND DEMONSTRATION GARDENS; THE REMAINDER IS SOLD IN ORDER TO PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL SOURCE OF REVENUE FOR THE SOCIAL BUSINESS PILOT. TO DATE, SOIL HAS SOLD MORE THAN 70,000 GALLONS OF COMPOST TO OVER 50 ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS - IMPROVING AGRICULTURAL YIELDS, SUPPORTING REFORESTATION EFFORTS, AND BOOSTING FARMING INCOMES AROUND HAITI.

SOIL ALSO PRIORITIZES EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES BY EMPLOYING MORE THAN SIXTY HAITIANS (OVER 90% OF THE STAFF), SOURCING MATERIALS LOCALLY, AND CONTRACTING WITH SMALL HAITIAN-RUN BUSINESSES. THIS INVESTMENT IN LOCAL RESOURCES IS KEY TO TRANSFORMING HAITI'S ECONOMY.

SOIL HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES, HUFFINGTON POST, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, LA TIMES, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, AMONG OTHER PUBLICATIONS. PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR LINKS.
